Great Tips for Cruising with your Family

Cruises are a great way for families to go on vacation together, but not have to do everything together. With the larger ships being the size of small cities, it is a perfect getaway to enjoy some time by yourself AND with your family all at the same time. Here are a few tips when thinking about your next cruise with the kids.

1) Strongly Recommend a balcony – If you are all in one room, you NEED have a balcony. Otherwise, when the kids go to bed at 9pm, so do you. But, by having your own private veranda,  you can enjoy an adult beverage while listening to the calm ocean pass by while your kids are fast asleep 5 feet away. OR, while your kids are busy having fun on the ship’s childrens program you have the ability to catch some alone time, sitting in the sun with nothing but a book in your hand and your feet up on the rail. AHH, you will enjoy this little upgrade, I promise.

2) Don’t Always Choose Disney for Family Cruises – While Disney is a great option for families, it isn’t the only option. Year in and year out, Royal Caribbean goes toe to toe with the Mouse Ears. They have surfing simulators onboard a FANTASTIC kids program and some even have parks and climbing walls. It is important to talk about the different options with your kids. Their involvement will help get them excited. As parents you need to utilize the kids program to give you some valuable alone time. Royal Caribbean and NCL.

3) Pick your Ship Carefully - This is quite possibly just as important, if not more so,  as your itinerary. You will be onboard the ship a lot (usually 2 – 3 sea days per 7 day itinerary) and you will be spending from 5pm onward each day on the ship. So, take the time to investigate all your options. Keep in mind, the certain ships attract certain kinds of customers. Feel free to reach out to us if you want to know who cruises on which cruise line.

4) Don’t worry if you don’t like ALL the Ports – If you find the perfect ship, the perfect time and perfect price, but don’t like one of the ports of call, don’t worry. When you pull into port EVERYONE leaves the ship, leaving you to have the run of the place. The spas are discounted, the pools are vacant.  It is a GREAT way to spend the day pretty much all by yourself.
